Current social events remind us tragically of the downfall of respect for human life that our society is suffering. On 24 November, the National Assembly adopted a law aimed at constitutionalising the right to abortion, to the triumphant cries of the "Insoumis" and "feminist" lobbies.
This law was supported by all the parties, including the RN, with some notable exceptions. In face of the general downfall, the few political "bastions" where a remnant of conscience still remained eventually gave way as well, relegating the vote to a mere personal "opinion" and marginalizing the commitment in favour of life a little more.
The dikes finally broke, under media and political pressure. And in reality the trump card is now in the hands of the government. On Women's Day, 8 March, Emmanuel Macron announced his intention to enshrine the right to abortion in the Constitution, probably in the form of a more general constitutional amendment. However, this is not what feminists were asking for. They demanded that a specific text be proposed rather than a global project which, according to them, would make consensus much more uncertain.
They are also concerned about the wording, demanding that it should read "the right to abortion" and not, as is the case today in the text adopted in the Senate at the beginning of February, "freedom to terminate a pregnancy". The nuance is not insignificant, since the word freedom can only be understood in reference to choice, and therefore to the possibility of an alternative - which the current law prohibits.
According to the HuffPost, we already know that the word "freedom" will appear in the text, but at the same time any questioning of the text will be prohibited. So, as Saint-Just said, "no freedom for the enemies of freedom". The support of the presidential party "Renaissance" for a law that enshrines the right to kill reveals with chilling acuteness the moral and spiritual trap into which our society has fallen.
At the same time, the government has launched an offensive on "euthanasia" by organising a "citizens' convention". It opened on 9 December and brought together 170 participants over nine three-day weekends. The participants are to "give their opinion on the advisability of a change in the legal framework". By a sinister coincidence of the calendar, this "consultation", which has a false air of participatory democracy but whose outcome is already known, will close on 19 March 2023 - St Joseph's day.
Emmanuel Macron had gargled with the extraordinary "democratic innovation" that this citizens' convention represents, with these terrifying words: "this democratic convention, I’ll defend it to the death... no pun intended". In the end, this sums up the government's current work. Between abortion and euthanasia, the government will leave its mark on history as a group of ideologues disconnected from reality who have sacrificed, in the name of libertarian ideology, the dignity of mankind and with it the Decalogue. It is not certain either that the Christmas and Easter holidays will survive this undermining.
